Missouri Ozarks

If you've ever driven through Salem, Missouri and thought it was just a quiet little town in the Ozarks - you're only half right. It IS quiet. It IS small. But tucked into the hills and rivers surrounding this Dent County gem is some of the best outdoor recreation in the entire state. For those who already call Salem home, this is no secret. But for anyone thinking about making the move, here's a taste of what's waiting right outside your front door.

1. Montauk State Park — A Trout Fishing Paradise

Wet a line at one of the Midwest's premier trout-fishing destinations at Montauk State Park. Located an easy ride from St. Louis, the park's waters are stocked each night from an on-site hatchery. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-timer, there's nothing quite like an early morning on the water here. The park also offers camping, cabins, and some of the most peaceful scenery in the Ozarks.

2. The Current River — Float, Kayak, and Canoe Country

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways is a true treasure, home to some of the clearest, most pristine rivers in the country, including the Current River and Jacks Fork River. These rivers offer exceptional canoeing, kayaking, and tubing opportunities. Spend a lazy summer afternoon floating downstream or pack a cooler and make a full day of it. This is Ozark living at its finest.

3. The Ozark Trail — Hiking Through the Heart of Missouri

The Ozark Trail is a highlight of the region - a 400-mile trail system running through the Ozarks offering some of the best hiking opportunities in Missouri. There are several trailheads near Salem, including the Chouteau Springs and Bluff View sections. Whether you want a quick afternoon hike or a multi-day backpacking adventure, the trail delivers stunning scenery and solitude in equal measure.

4. Bo's Hollow — A Hidden Gem Worth the Drive

For a taste of yesteryear, Bo's Hollow - not far from Montauk - is an interactive museum with a 1930s working gas pump where you can explore an old-timey village and take a country road tour in an old Model A Ford. It's the kind of place you won't find on most tourist maps, which makes it all the more special.

5. Echo Bluff State Park & Round Spring

Take a drive down Highway 19 toward Eminence and you'll pass through some of Missouri's most jaw-dropping scenery. Along the way, stops at Round Spring and Echo Bluff State Park are well worth the time, and a picnic at Alley Spring and Mill near Eminence is a classic Ozarks afternoon.

6. Fancher Hill Vineyard & Winery — A Local Favorite

Not every hidden gem involves hiking boots. For wine lovers, Fancher Hill Vineyard & Winery is a local gem located just outside of town, offering beautiful views, a relaxing atmosphere, and a variety of locally produced wines. It's the perfect way to wrap up a weekend outdoors.

7. The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood — A Unique Annual Event

Each March, the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood brings dozens of the sport's best rally racing drivers to Salem to test themselves through twists and turns on roads that are decidedly less traveled  including a famous cattle guard jump that can send cars flying up to 100 feet through the air. Even if you're not a motorsports fan, the energy this event brings to the community is something to experience.

8. Local Trails Right in Town

You don't always have to drive far to enjoy the outdoors. The Salem Frisco RR Trail follows the old Burlington Northern Railroad bed with an 8-foot wide asphalt path for hiking and biking, while the Shawnee-Mac Lakes Trail follows the edge of Turner Lake and Zizke Lake, providing beautiful views of the water and park grounds. Perfect for a morning walk or evening ride.
